Solar Concept Car

Solar Concept Car

In the first two semesters of the master’s program Innovation and Product Management (IPM) it was the semester assignment to develop two different solar car concepts from scratch to a final 1:6 scale model.

After a several weeks lasting brainstorming and ideation phase we agreed on two basic concept ideas:

(1) Solar Muscle Concept

Based on the original American version of the muscle cars of the 60s and 70s this concept tries to excite with the emotional aspect and jumps right on the retro wave of Mini and Beetle. The main idea was to imitate and develop the characteristic parts of a legendary Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro or Dodge Charger. The next step was to integrate the solar panels in a subtle and useful manner. The final concept was based on an exchangeable hull (the muscle car look) and a basic frame (cockpit, engine and solar panels).

(2) Solar Stealth Concept

Whereas the muscle car concept was focused on the emotional aspect of the future buyer of solar cars, the stealth concept was based on a more technical, innovative approach. As in the stealth bomber very even surfaces should utilize the energy of the sun as much as possible. Therefore the main surface angles should orient at the sun. So forth, the whole upper surface is covered with solar panels. The result is a very futuristic, dynamic look. The whole concept is called „Photon“.
